Background
Nitric oxide associated-1 (NOA1), also known as C4orf14, is an evolutionarily conserved guanosine triphosphate (GTP) binding protein. It localizes predominantly to mitochondria in mammalian cells. Human NOA1 has been shown to interact with complex I of the electron transport chain and with three mitoribosomal proteins, MRPL12, MRPS27, and MRPS29, indicating that NOA1 may interact with the mitoribosome. Recent studies suggest that C4orf14 interacts with human mitochondrial nucleoids, and is involved in the biogenesis of the small mitochondrial ribosomal subunit.
