Description
Sepiapterin exhibits a biphasic function in ovarian cancer cells. Alone, it stimulates proliferation and migration via nitric oxide (NO)-dependent activation of ERK, Akt, and p70S6K pathways. However, in the presence of the growth factor VEGF-A, it has a suppressive role. It inhibits VEGF-A-induced proliferation and migration by down-regulating VEGFR-2 expression through a p70S6K-dependent, but NO-independent, mechanism. This inhibitory effect suggests its potential therapeutic value against VEGFR-2-overexpressing cancers.
