    PSMα peptides, produced by Staphylococcus aureus, are a group of hydrophobic peptides, often formylated at the N-terminal, ranging from 20-25 amino acids in length. These peptides play a role in the bacterium's virulence, acting as chemoattractants for neutrophils at high nanomolar concentrations and causing cytolysis at micromolar concentrations. They are also involved in promoting phagosome lysis and bacterial escape, as well as in the rapid induction of neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation​

    The PSMα peptides differentially modulate the aggregation of α-synuclein (α-syn), a protein associated with Parkinson's disease. PSMα1 and PSMα4 are described to form fibrillar amyloid structures on their own, while PSMα2 and PSMα3 form α-helix-rich amorphous aggregates.

  • About TFA salt

    Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) is a strong acid, which is commonly used to cleave synthesized peptides from solid-phase resins and is also used to improve HPLC performance in the peptide purification step. By default, custom peptides are delivered as lyophilized TFA salts, and can contain as much as 10-45% TFA.

    TFA in custom peptides can cause inexplicable discrepancies in subsequent assay data. For instance, TFA in nM concentrations has been shown to interfere with cellular assays, inhibiting cellular proliferation in some instances, and increasing cell viability in others . It has also been found to be an unintended allosteric modulator of the glycine receptor, GlyR.
