    Egg-laying hormone (ELH) is a neuropeptide precursor in the marine mollusk Aplysia. The prohormone undergoes post-translational proteolytic processing, which includes cleavage at Leu-Leu residues, to generate multiple peptide products. Among these, the acidic peptide (AP) is further processed to yield specific fragments such as AP9–27 and AP1–20. These peptides are colocalized in vesicles with ELH and are transported to specific neuronal targets, where they are released in a calcium-dependent manner. The processing results in a differential distribution of peptide forms at target cells, and variations such as [Thr21]AP can occur.
