  • Description

Brevinin-1BLc is a cationic antimicrobial peptide isolated from the skin secretions of the plains leopard frog Lithobates blairi. The peptide has the amino acid sequence FLPIIAGIAAKFLPKIFCTISKKC and belongs to the brevinin-1 family, characterized by a C-terminal disulfide-bridged cyclic domain. Brevinin-1BLc demonstrates potent broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 25 mM against Escherichia coli, 1.5 mM against Staphylococcus aureus, and 3 mM against the opportunistic yeast pathogen Candida albicans.

Structural analysis shows that brevinin-1BLc adopts an alpha-helical amphipathic conformation in membrane-mimetic environments, which facilitates interaction with microbial cell membranes. The peptide also displays cytolytic activity against mammalian cells, with LC50 values of 9 mM for human erythrocytes and 6 mM for HepG2 human hepatoma-derived cells. The primary structure of brevinin-1BLc contains amino acid residues that confer a net positive charge at physiological pH, contributing to its high antimicrobial potency compared to other members of the brevinin-1 family with lower cationicity.

  • Storage Guidelines

  • About TFA salt

Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) is a common counterion from the purification process using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The presence of TFA can affect the peptide's net weight, appearance, and solubility.

Impact on Net Weight: The TFA salt contributes to the total mass of the product. In most cases, the peptide content constitutes >80% of the total weight, with TFA accounting for the remainder.

Solubility: TFA salts generally enhance the solubility of peptides in aqueous solutions.

In Biological Assays: For most standard in vitro assays, the residual TFA levels do not cause interference. However, for highly sensitive cellular or biochemical studies, please be aware of its presence.
